Amalaki is a moderate sized tree, bearing round fruits, popularly known as Amla. It grows across India as wild and cultivated. Its fruit is widely used as rasayana (tonic) in ayurveda.

• • Oxidative stress: Amalaki has been reported to scavenge the free radicals and thus reduce the oxidative stress, which is responsible for the premature degeneration and death of the cells. On this basis, Amalaki is used for the management of – Low immunity, recurrent infections, degenerative diseases, CAD, stroke, osteoarthritis, dementia, Alzheimer’s, neuropathies, retinal degeneration, etc.

  • Hair loss: As Amalaki is a potent 5α- reductase inhibitor, it promotes hair growth, effectively. On the basis of this activity, Amalaki is widely used to promote hair growth in various types of hair loss (alopecia).

  • Dyslipidaemia & Atherosclerosis: Amalaki has been found to effectively lower the raised cholesterol triglycerides in the blood, and thus prevent atherosclerosis. It can thus be used in the management of dyslipidaemia, and diseases resulting from atherosclerosis, like – CAD, Stroke, peripheral vascular disease, etc.

  • Cognitive disorders: Amalaki has been found to enhance memory due to its anti-cholinesterase activity. On the basis of this activity, it can be used in various cognitive disorders, including poor memory, amnesia, and dementia.

  • Wounds & Ulcers disorders: Amalaki has been reported to promote healing of the wounds and ulcers by increasing cellular proliferation and cross-linking of collagen at the wound site. It is thus used in the management of non-healing wounds and ulcers.

  • Kidney failure: Amalaki has been reported to reduce the elevated serum creatinine and blood urea. It is thus used in the management of kidney failure.

  • Cancer: Amalaki has been reported to reduce possess anti-mutagenic, anti-proliferative, antioxidant, and immune-modulator activity. On this basis, it could be added in the anti-cancer therapy as a supportive drug.

  • CAD: Amalaki has been reported to possess cardioprotective activity due to its antioxidant action. It is thus used in the management of CAD.
