Widely used in sciatica and arthritis.

• Useful in sciatica – Parijata has been reported to be quite useful in the management of sciatica pain. It acts in this condition largely because of its antiinflammatory and analgesic activities. In addition, it has neurotropic effect on the spinal cord, brain and the nerves. Further, it was found to have antidepressant activity. All these activities, make Parijata especially useful in sciatica pain arising due to various pathologies - disc prolapse, lumbar spondylosis, disc degeneration and trauma.

• Alleviates inflammation – Parijata has been reported to have antiinflammatory activity. It acts by inhibiting the production / release of inflammatory mediators. It is therefore useful in the management of inflammatory disorders – arthritis, neuritis, PIVD, myositis and tendinitis.

• Alleviates pain – Parijata has been reported to relieve pain by lowering pain nerve endings (nociceptors), possibly by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins, and other substances resulting in pain. In addition, it may block pain signals in the spinal cord and the thalamus. It is therefore useful in the management of painful disorders – sciatica, low backache, arthritis, arthralgias, neuralgias, dysmenorrhea, dental pain, fibromyalgia, and chronic pain.

• Anti-pyretic – Parijata has been reported to lower raised body temperature as in fever. It is thus used as an antipyretic drug in fevers.

  Parijata (Nyctanthes arbor-tristis)

  Parijata (Nyctanthes arbor-tristis) is a shrub or a small tree growing to 10 m (33 ft) tall, with flaky grey bark. The leaves are opposite, simple, 6–12 cm (2.4–4.7 in) long and 2–6.5 cm (0.79–2.56 in) broad, with an entire margin. The flowers are fragrant, with a five- to eight-lobed white corolla with an orange-red centre; they are produced in clusters of two to seven together, with individual flowers opening at dusk and finishing at dawn. The fruit is a bilobed, flat brown heart-shaped to round capsule 2 cm (0.79 in) diameter, each lobe containing a single seed.
