Widely used in renal and urinary disorders.

• Improves renal functions – Punarnava is a known diuretic. It acts by increasing the excretion of sodium. In addition, it protects the kidneys from toxic substances, and helps dissolve urinary stones. It is used in the management of early / reversible renal failure, raised blood urea and serum creatinine, oliguria and anuria, hypertension, edema, heart failure and ascites.

• Improves hepatic functions – Punarnava has been reported to improve liver functions. It protects the liver against toxic substances, lowers raised liver enzymes, and corrects various abnormalities in the liver. It is used for the management of early cirrhosis, hepatitis, jaundice and fatty liver.

• Useful in immune disorders – Punarnava has been reported to have immunomodulator activity. It is thus used in the management of auto-immune disorders – RA, SLE, psoriasis, lichen, IBD, alopecia areata, auto-immune glomerulonephritis and auto-immune thyroiditis.
