Sahdevi is a small, erect, annual herb (1-3 ft) with pinkish violet flowers. It grows across India up to the height of 4,000 ft. It is widely used for the management of fever, urinary stones. Its

• Sahdevi has following major pharmacological actions and therapeutic uses -

• 1. Smoking cessation: Several preclinical trials have reported that Sahdevi helps in smoking cessation. It Probably acts by maintaining the blood levels of nicotine and dopamine, and improving respiratory tissue.

• 2. Urinary disorders: Traditionally, Sahdevi has been used for the management of various urinary disorders, especially urinary stones. Scientific studies have revealed that Sahdevi protects the kidneys against the damaging effects of toxins and poisons. In addition, it increases the production of urine (diuretic activity) and has anti-bacterial activity. On this basis, Sahdevi can be used in early and reversible kidney failure to increase production of urine and lower the raised urea and creatinine in the blood, urinary stones, and urinary tract infection (UTI).

• 3. Cancer: Sahdevi has been reported to possess anti-mutagenic activity. It can thus be included as a supportive drug in the anti-cancer therapy.

• 4. Bacterial infection: Sahdevi has been reported to possess anti-microbial activity. It is thus useful in the management of various bacterial infections, especially in the genito-urinary tracts, like – UTI, prostatitis, urethritis, PID, etc.

• 5. Inflammatory diseases: Sahdevi has been reported to alleviate inflammation by inhibiting the inflammatory mediators. It can thus be used in the management of various inflammatory diseases, including arthritis, prostatitis, PID, etc.

• 6. Fever: Sahdevi has been seen to lower the raised body temperature in fever. In addition, it possesses a mild analgesic activity, too. It is thus used as an antipyretic and mild analgesic to lower raised body temperature, and relieve headache and bodyache associated with fever.

• 7. Liver disorders: Sahdevi has been seen to protect the liver against various toxins, poisons, and infections. It is thus useful in the management of hepatitis and jaundice.

• 8. Viral infections: Sahdevi has been inhibit the replication of viruses. It is thus useful for the management of various viral infections, especially, viral hepatitis, and URTI.

• 9. Piles: Sahdevi has been reported to have anti-hemorrhoidal activity. It is thus useful in the management of piles.
