• Cancer: Described as sama-visha-nashanam, Sariva has been reported to possess cytotoxic, cytostatic, and cyto-differentiative (anti-mutagenic) activity. It can thus be included as a supportive drug in the anti-cancer therapy.

• Cataract: Experimental studies on Sariva reveal that it possesses anti-cataractous activity. has been reported to possess anti-mutagenic activity. Methanol extract of its root inhibits aldose reductase activity, lowers blood glucose, delays progression of cataract, decreases osmotic stress and prevents loss of antioxidants. Sariva thus could be used to delay the progression of cataract.

• Inflammatory diseases: Sariva has been used in the management of various inflammatory diseases in ayurveda. Research reveals that it alleviates inflammation by inhibiting the inflammatory mediators.

• Antioxidant: Sariva has been described as balya in ayurveda. Research shows that it protects against the oxidative stress resulting from free radicals, and thus prevents the occurrence of diseases from the same. It can therefore be used as an antioxidant to promote health and prevent diseases.

• Rheumatoid arthritis: Sariva has been described as sama-visha-hara in ayurveda. Research shows that because of its immune-modulator activity, it possesses anti-arthritic activity. Sariva, thus could be used in the management of rheumatoid and other types of auto-immune joint disorders.

• Water retention / Edema: Sariva has been reported to increase the production of urine. It can therefore be used as a diuretic in the management of edema or water retention.

• Neuro-degenerative disorders: Sariva has been seen to inhibit the cholinesterase that destroys the acetylcholine and results in neuro-degenerative disorders. It can therefore be included in the management of neuro-degenerative disorders like – dementia, Parkinson’s neuropathies, nereve degeneration, cerebral degeneration, etc.
