Shankhfuli is a 1-2 ft tall, flowering plant, that grows across India as a weed in the cultivated fields and pastures.
Shankhfuli could be useful in the management of following diseases -
1. Cancer: Scientific research has revealed that like Sadabahar (Vinca rosea) - another member of Apocynacea family, Shankhfuli too possesses Cytotoxic effect on the fast-multiplying cancer, and thus inhibits the growth of cancer cells (anti-proliferative). In addition, it possesses a high free radical scavenging activity, too. Though the exact mode of action of Shankhfuli remains to be known, it could be acting like Vinca rosea, inhibiting the assembly of micro-tubules in the cancer cells.
2. Piles: Shankhfuli whole plant is commonly used for the management of bleeding and non-bleeding piles. When used in 5-10 gms doses, twice a day, the bleeding usually stops within a week. However, it is continued for 4-6 weeks for complete improvement.
