Haritaki is a large tree with thick dark-brown bark and drupe-like blackish fruits having five ridges. It grows almost across India. Its fruit is used for medicinal purpose. It contains tannins,

• Anti-oxidant: Haritaki has been reported to have excellent free radical scavenging activity thus reducing the oxidative stress. On this basis, it could be used in various diseases resulting from oxidative stress.

• Dyslipidemia: Haritaki has been reported to significantly decrease the raised cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood, thus acting as anti-atherogenic. It is thus useful in the prevention and management of dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis.

• Diabetes: Haritaki has been reported to significantly lower the raised sugar. It is thus useful in diabetes type-II.

• Auto-immune disorders: Haritaki has been seen to modulate the immunity. It is thus useful in various auto-immune diseases, including RA, SLE, psoriasis, lichen, etc.

• Cancer: Haritaki has been reported to possess anti-mutagenic activity. It is thus useful as a supportive drug in the anti-cancer drug treatment.
