  • Hypertension Harmal lowers the blood pressure by direct dilatation of the blood vessels. It is widely used for the management of hypertension.

  • Harmal seeds have been to have toxic effect on the cancer cells. In addition, it possesses antioxidant activity. Harmal, therefore, can be used as a novel antioxidant and anti-tumor drug in anti-cancer therapy.

  • Harmal stimulates the bone formation and inhibits its resorption. It can therefore f P. harmala, may be useful for treatment of osteoporosis.

  • Harmal lowers the heart rate (-ve chronotropic), but it increases the force of contraction of the heart muscle (+ve inotropic). It therefore could be used to treat tachycardia and heart failure.

  • Harmal is antidepressant. Studies reveals that beta-carbolines present in Harmal strongly inhibits monoamine oxidase enzyme, and thus the degradation of serotonin and norepinephrine.

  • Harmal relieves pain. It probably produces its analgesic effect probabaly through an opioid-modulated mechanism, and thus acts both centrally and peripherally. It is useful in the management of pain in various painful diseases.

  • Harmal has been reported to possess anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-protozoal activity. It is therefore useful in various bacterial, fungal, and prpotozoal infections. sistant isolates of bacteria.

  • Harmala increases menstrual flow and increases uterine contractions. It is thus used in oligomenorrhea. This activity results from its quinazoline alkaloids (vasicine and vasicinone). However, it should not be used during pregnancy, as it may result in abortion.

    Harmal is well tolerated in therapeutic doses. Yet, in high doses, it may result in neuro-sensorial symptoms, visual hallucinations, slight rise of body temperature, bradycardia, low BP, psychomotor agitation, tremors, ataxia and vomiting, paralysis, liver degeneration, euphoria, convulsions, etc. Harmal is not safe during pregnancy as it may result in abortion.
