Kanchnar is a very popular drug. It is a medium sized tree. Its leaves are bilobed leaves. It has beautiful flowers in several colors – purple, red, pink, and white. Its stem bark and flowers are

  • Hypo-thyroidism: Kanchnar is the choice drug in thyroid disorders (Galagand). It is commonly used as Kanchnar-Guggulu. Some doctors use it as Kanchnar churna, too. Scientific research shows that Kanchnar stimulates the production of thyroid hormones - T3 & T4 and lowers the raised TSH. In addition, it modulates immunity. On this basis, Kanchnar should be ysed in hypothyroidism (Galagand), especially when it results from auto-immune (Hashimoto’s) thyroiditis.

  • Diabetes: An interesting action of Kanchnar is – It lowers raised blood sugar. In other words, it is anti-diabetic. This activity is present in its bark, as well as leaves. This activity seems to be due to increased glucose metabolism caused by Kanchnar. On this basis, Kanchnar could be used for the management of diabetes type I & II, both.

  • Cancer: In ayurveda, Kanchnar is an important drug for the management of lymphadenopathies (Gandamala) and tumors (Arbuda). Interestingly, scientific research too endorsed the view of ayurveda by reporting that Kanchnar has got anti-mutagenic (Anti-cancer) activity. On this basis, it could be used as supportive drug in the management of various tumors including the malignant tumors. In addition, keeping in view its role to protect the liver and kidneys, it could be used to protect against the harmful effects of chemotherapy.

  • Tuberculosis: In ayurveda, Kanchnar has been reported as Kshaya-hara. On the other hand, scientific studies reveal that Kanchnar possesses anti-tubercular activity. Both the observations seem to talk about the same disease condition. On this basis, Kanchnar could be used to manage TB, as a supportive drug.

  • Auto-immune disorders: Kanchnar has been described as Asra-nut in ayurveda. This term can have many meanings, including – Immuno-modulator. Interestingly, scientific research has reported the presence of immune-modulator activity in Kanchnar. On this basis, this drug could be used in various auto-immune disorders, including – Auto-immune (Hashimoto’s) thyroiditis, RA, SLE, psoriasis, eczema, etc.

  • Liver disorders: Kanchnar has been described as Pitta-hara in ayurveda. That indicates its useful in liver disorders. Happily, scientific research shows that Kanchnar protects the liver against toxins and poisons. Hence, Kanchnar is useful in the prevention, as well as, management of various liver disorders, especially hepatitis.

  • Kidney disorders: Kanchnar has been described as Sangrahi in ayurveda. That’s an indirect indicator of its usefulness in kidney and urinary disorders. The same has been proven by scientific research, too, that shows that Kanchnar protects the kidneys against toxins and poisons. On this basis, Kanchnar could be used in management of various kidney and urinary disorders, especially diabetic nephropathy.

  • Bacterial infections: Kanchnar has described as Krimighna in ayurveda. On the other hand, scientific research shows that it possesses anti-bacterial activity. On this basis, Kanchnar could be used for the management of various bacterial infections, especially the chronic infections.

  • Inflammatory diseases: Kanchnar has been described as Vrana-hara in ayurveda that indirectly indicates its usefulness in inflammation. Scientific research, on the other hand tells us that it inhibits the production / release of inflammatory mediators, like cytokines and leukotrienes, and thus acts as anti-inflammatory. On this basis, Kanchnar could be used in the management of various inflammatory disorders, including – ENT diseases, PID, arthritis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, dermatitis, etc.

  • Gastric ulcer: Kanchnar has been described as Vrana-hara in ayurveda indicating its usefulness in ulcers. Scientific research reveals that it promotes ulcer healing in the stomach. On this basis, it could be used in gastric ulcer.

  • Wounds: Kanchnar has been described as Vrana-hara in ayurveda indicating its usefulness in various types of wounds and ulcers. Scientific research also proves that that it promotes ulcer healing. On this basis, it could be used in the management of non-healing wounds and ulcers.
