Ashvagandha (Withania somnifera)

Ashvagandha, a widely known medicinal herb for its antioxidant / rejuvenative / immuno-modulator, regenerative and tonic actions, has been described to normalise the abnormal vayu, that in turn brings about normal growth and development in children. Further, specifying its role to enhance growth and development in children and adolescents, it has been described as stimulates growth and development in children and adolescents. In addition, it has been described as it increases the physical strength of the children and adolescents. Furthermore, it has been specifically described to promote anabolic activity(growth) in children suffering from low / slow (stunted) physical growth. In addition, it has been described as a potent androgenic. On the basis of its actions described above, ashvagandha seems to play a significant role in stimulating growth in children and adolescents. As increased androgen secretion during puberty ( in males from testes and in females from adrenal cortex) stimulates growth hormone secretion, the androgenic action of ashvagandha assumes special significance in stimulating the growth in children and adolescents, especially during the puberty.
Kapikachhu (Mucuna pruriens)

Kapikachhu, another important medicinal herb in ayurveda, widely used for the management of neuro-endocrine disorders especially the tremor / Parkinson’s disease, has been described as a drug that normalises abnormal neuro-endocrine system / growth hormone). In addition, it has been described to promote growth and development and increase physical strength. Further, it has been described as a potent stimulant of the androgenic activity. All these actions of kapikachhu are suggestive of its role in stimulating the release / activity of the growth hormone. However, there still appears another mode of action of kapikachhu in stimulating growth in children. As L-DOPA forms one of the factors that stimulates the release of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) from the hypothalamus, that in turn stimulates growth hormone secretion from anterior pituitary gland, kapikachhu, by virtue of ts L-DOPA content, may be acting through this additional pathway, resulting in the enhanced growth of the children and adolescents.
