Kantakari is a prickly, diffuse herb, growing in waste lands, across India. Its whole plant is used for medicinal purposes. Its whole plant is widely used in respiratory and allergic disorders. It

• Anti-allergic: Kantakari is reported to have anti-allergic activity. It acts by preventing the release of the granules in the mast cells and basophils that contain histamine, bradykinin, serotonin, cytokines, and leucotriens. It is useful in the management of allergic disorders – nasal, bronchial, skin, food allergy.

• Asthma: Kantakari is reported to dilate the constricted bronchi and bronchioles, by its anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory activities. It is useful in the management of bronchial asthma, asthmatic bronchitis, and COPD.

• Cough: Kantakari is useful in cough in several ways – It inhibits the allergic substances like histamine; It dilates the constricted bronchi and bronchioles; and, It facilitates the expectoration of the mucus present in the bronchial tree.

• Inflammatory disorders: Kantakari has been reported to have anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting the production / release of inflammatory mediators. It is therefore useful in the management of inflammatory disorders – arthritis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, dermatitis etc.

• Bacterial infections: Kantakari has been reported to possess anti-bacterial activity. It is therefore useful in the management of bacterial infections.

• Diabetes: Kantakari has been reported to lower the raised blood sugar, either by acting as a secretagogue, or insulin senstizer. It is thus used in diabetes type-II.

• Liver disorders: Kantakari has been reported to protect the liver against harmful substances (toxins / poisons). It is thus useful in the prevent and management of liver disorders, like - Jaundice, hepatitis, fatty liver, early cirrhosis, cholecystitis.

• Hypertension: Kantakari has been reported to lower the raised blood pressure. It is thus useful in hypertension.
