Sharpunkha is a 1-3 ft, small perennial herb with purple flowers. Its root is used for medicinal purposes. It grows wild, across India. It is widely used for the management of liver and splenic

  • Liver disorders: Sharpunkha has been reported to protect the liver from various damaging factors and reinforce its functions. It is thus useful in the management of various liver disorders, including hepatitis, jaundice, early cirrhosis, fatty liver, early gall stones, cholecystitis, etc.

  • Cancer: Sharpunkha has been reported to possess anti-mutagenic activity. It can thus be added as a supportive drug in the anti-cancer drug therapy. In addition, it could be used to counter the adverse effects of chemotherapy.

  • Wounds & Ulcers: Sharpunkha has been reported to promote wound healing. This is evident by a significant increase in the rate of wound contraction and by enhanced epithelization. In addition, it results in significant increase in tensile strength and collagen levels, too. On this basis, Sharpunkha could be used for the treatment of wounds and ulcers.

  • Edema and ascites: Sharpunkha has been reported to possess significant diuretic activity as evidenced by increased urine volume, electrolyte concentration, and alkaline pH of the urine. It is thus useful in various types of edema and ascites arising due to abnormalities in the heart, liver, and kidneys.

  • Pain, Fever, & Inflammation: Sharpunkha has been reported to alleviate pain, lower raised temperature in fever, and inflammation. It is thus useful in painful, febrile, and inflammatory diseases.

  • Peptic ulcer: Sharpunkha has been reported to have anti-ulcer activity, that could be because it protects and strengthens the mucous membrane in the stomach and duodenum. On this basis, Sharpunkha could be sued to prevent and treat the peptic ulcer.

  • Dyslipidemia: Sharpunkha has been reported to lower the raised cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. It could thus be used for the prevention and management of dyslipidaemia and atherosclerosis.

  • Asthma: Sharpunkha has been reported to dilate the constricted bronchi and bronchioles, possibly by preventing the release of histamine and other substances that result in allergic reaction and bronchospasm. It could thus be used for the prevention and management of bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis.

  • Diabetes: Sharpunkha has been reported to lowers the raised blood sugar. In addition, it lowers the raised cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. It could thus be used for the management of diabetes type-II.

  • Viral infections: Sharpunkha has been reported to inhibit the replication of viruses. It could thus be used for the management of various viral infections.
